 AN INTERVIEW WITH MADAM VICE PRESIDENT - Comr. Adewunmi Jessica Osonoiki

Good day, Ms. Vice President. Please introduce yourself in a few words?

Good afternoon.

My name is Adewunmi Jessica Osonoiki. I am a 300lvl student of the department, and I am the 10th NASELS LASU vice president.

We've seen the flyer for the debate competition. May we ask how you came up with such a brilliant theme?

Oh, it was a collective idea, actually. So, the department executives in one of our online progress report meetings agreed that it would make a lot of sense to have a debate competition whose grand finale would happen at the second edition of the NASELS Academic Symposium. When planning for the symposium commenced, I discussed it with the committee, and we developed the idea into something beautiful.

How will the participants for this competition be selected?

So, we're using a team system. Interested participants are to create a group of 3 persons to compete. They'll reach out to us, and we'll give them the modalities. After the preliminaries, we'll select the top 3 teams and have them compete at the final level.

Who are the judges for this competition? 

Okay, so for the preliminaries, we will be having Saheed Sunday, the winner of Word War VI, and a few other exceptional debaters within and outside the department whom we cannot reveal now. At the final level however, we plan to bring executives of the LASU Debate Society to judge.

Will there be any form of training for participants?

After the preliminaries, yes. We'll organize a training session for the finalists.

What are your goals for this competition? What impact do you hope to make?

We hope to encourage and facilitate scholarly discussions amongst students of the department, and we hope to bring to the limelight, talented public speakers in the NASELS community. Also, we really just want people to have fun. Debating is fun, you know.

What are the prizes for winners?

So, it's a "winner takes all" kind of competition. The winning team gets a prize of 20,000 naira. However, all finalists will be certified and celebrated.

Does this NASELS administration have more competitions coming asides this debate?

As a matter of fact, we do. We have a writing competition in the works. This one is for creative writers, and being a creative writer myself, I am pretty excited about it. We also plan to announce the winner of the writing competition at the academic symposium, so everyone stay tuned. We'll be putting out word for the competition anytime now. There's also the Mr. and Miss NASELS pageantry.

Please, give interested participants a tip on how to win the debate.

Oh, really, can I do that? I find this request really funny. Truth is, we're just encouraging you to bring your A-game. There'll be students of the department eager to listen to you. You don't want to disappoint them. But then again, remember it's a learning process, so whatever happens, what matters most is that you're learning.
